A one hundred year old Turkish hand grenade was recently discovered when conservation measures were being conducted near the Damascus Gate in the Old City of Jerusalem.

The Tachana

Hidden from the public eye for many years, the Tachana (or Station), the historic Tel Aviv-Jaffa train station complex located between the Neve Zedek neighborhood and the Mediterranean Sea, has recently re-opened to the public after a NIS 100 million, 10 year restoration program.

12th Century Fresco from the Monastery of Miriam Discovered in the Gethsemane Courtyard in Jerusalem
An enormous impressive wall painting (fresco) that was discovered in excavations by the Israel Antiquities Authority in the Monastery of Miriam in the Gethsemane courtyard in Jerusalem will be displayed for the first time when the renewed Israel Museum opens its doors to the public on July 26, 2010.

Eilat: Closer to Europe than Ever Before…

El Al will begin operating three flights a day from Tel Aviv (Ben Gurion) to Eilat from 1 August in a move that is expected to increase the number of foreign tourists flying into Israel's southernmost resort.

In an extremely rare discovery, archaeological excavations by the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) in a natural hollow in the bedrock exposed prior to the installation of the northern gas pipeline at Tel Qashish near Yokneam has revealed over 100 intact cultic vessels and other extraordinary items about 3,500 years old.

Whales on Ashkelon Beach

The 1.25 million NIS artistic project, funded by the Tourism Ministry, is the creative work of Israeli sculptor Arele Ben Arieh who drew inspiration from the image of the whale as a mysterious and awesome sea mammal and represents the coastal city’s ancient heritage as described in the Scriptures.

A newly restored 18th-century synagogue from Suriname – one of only two remaining examples – will be a highlight of the Israel Museum’s newly installed Mandel Wing for Jewish Art and Life, opening to the public on July 26, 2010 along with the expanded and renewed Israel Museum campus.

The International Conservation Center “Città di Roma” will be inaugurated today, 13 May, in Acre. The Center Città di Roma will be managed by the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA), in partnership with the Old Acre Development Company and Acre Municipality, with the support of the Italian Government and its Institutions.

Rare Illuminated Copy of Mishneh Torah

The Israel Museum, Jerusalem recently announced the long-term loan of an extraordinary 15th-century illuminated manuscript, a handwritten copy of the Mishneh Torah by Maimonides, considered by many to be the greatest rabbinical figure in Medieval Spain.

Wall Paintings of Hurva Synagogue

The Hurva Synagogue, once the center of life in the Old City of Jerusalem until its destruction

The wall paintings, which had undergone several stages of restoration work since the late 1800s, were restored, based on the spirit of the past paintings, with each synagogue wall showcasing a painting of one of the holy cities in the Land of Israel.
