Nazareth, which began as a Jewish village in Jesus’ day is now a bustling modern city with an ancient heart, preserving some 30 churches and monasteries. Most of the sites, including the colorful market, are concentrated in the charming Old City, now renewed with guest houses and fine restaurants. Among the landmark churches are the Basilica of the Annunciation, the Church of St. Gabriel (Mary’s Well), the Synagogue Church and Mensa Christi. Also in the Old City is the White Mosque, which doubles as an education and culture center and museum. Nazareth has several hotels for every pocketbook.
